Huw Edwards Apologises As Former BBC News Anchor Gets Suspended Prison Sentence

BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has apologised after he was convicted of driving while almost three times the legal alcohol limit.

Huw Edwards was banned from driving for 12 months and given a 12-month suspended prison sentence.

The 60-year-old appeared at Llanelli Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court heard that Edwards was stopped by police in his Range Rover in Carmarthenshire.

He was breathalysed and found to have 96 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Edwards, who is a regular presenter of the BBC's Six and Ten O'Clock News, stood down from his role after being charged in October.

In a statement released through the BBC, Edwards said: "I deeply regret my actions and accept the sentence imposed by the court.

"I have always taken my responsibilities as a role model seriously and I am very sorry to have let down my colleagues and the public. I am determined to learn from my mistake and to rebuild their trust.

"I would like to thank my family and friends for their support during this difficult time.

Edwards is the latest in a number of high-profile figures to be convicted of drink-driving offences in recent months.

In September, former England footballer Paul Gascoigne was banned from driving for three years after being caught drink-driving for the second time in three years.

And in October, former BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles was banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
